Your camera produces files designed to be printed onto paper. Typically a printed image needs 200 dots per inch whereas the same image displayed on a screen only requires 72-96 dots per inch. If your image is only going to be displayed on the web, or projected onto a screen, then it is an advantage to reduce the size of the image file. Smaller files are displayed faster and more of them fit onto a memory stick (flash drive).

So, how can a picture be reduced in size?

The photograph needs to be loaded into image editing software which is used to produce a copy of the original at much lower resolution. Note low resolution equals small file size. Some applications allow all the pictures in a folder to be processed at once; so called batch processing. Remember to always produce copies, this will ensure that your originals remain at full resolution.

The screen shots below show how an image may be down sized using Adobe Photoshop Elelments, other picture editing applications will have similar functions.
SaveForWeb

In Adobe Photoshop Elements do the following:

1) Load the full size image into Elements.

2) From the menu select :
File > Save for Web

This page will open :

SaveForWeb2

3) Select JPEG, High or Medium and then new size to 1000 (or less) on the longest edge. Note the new file size is 43.5k (under the Right Hand photo).

4) Select OK and a save file dialog will open - navigate to a folder and save your reduced file with a new name.

Repeat for each photograph. Give each picture a short name which will be used as the caption, send the pictures to me by email to smk AT anvic.net or by post on a CD or by hand at the club. Please make sure your name is on the CD or on the email.
